Buyer decision sequence

How to Choose a Beverage Bottling Line

Choose the process route before comparing machine counts: define the beverage, process condition, package, output, downstream pack and factory interfaces.

Answer first

What should a buyer decide first?

Start with the product and its required process conditions. A container and target output become useful only after the line knows whether it must carbonate, heat-treat, hot-fill, cool or handle a project-specific route.

Product brief

Describe the beverage in plain language

A buyer does not need to prescribe UHT, ultra-clean or aseptic equipment. Share the recipe, carbonated state, particles, desired shelf-life approach and known filling temperature so the engineering questions are visible.

  • Product name and recipe description
  • Brix and CO2 if known
  • Pulp or particle information
  • Temperature and sanitation expectations

Reference SKU

Fix one reference package and output

Use one bottle or can drawing, closure, label and pack as the comparison basis. List other SKUs and required changeovers separately.

  • PET, glass or can
  • Drawing and volume
  • Closure and label
  • Target BPH/CPH and pack pattern

Scope comparison

Compare boundaries, not headlines

Ask each supplier to show preparation, filling, post-fill, packaging, utilities, controls, documentation, FAT and site-service boundaries against the same brief.

  • Included process systems
  • Buyer-side utilities
  • Optional and excluded equipment
  • Acceptance basis and project responsibilities

Quote-ready input set

Ten inputs turn a speed request into an engineering brief.

Unknowns are allowed. Marking them clearly produces a better first review than hiding them behind a generic “turnkey” request.

Architecture Decision Record

Give every important decision a visible evidence status

The existing project checklist identifies what to collect. This record shows how each answer may—and may not—be used during configuration and quotation.

Decision areaConfirmedConditionalSpecialist review

Decision status rules

Do not let assumptions silently become specifications

Each status has a different effect on design, quotation and approval.

01

Confirmed

Use when the current project evidence is approved and suitable for the stated decision gate.

  • Name the source document and revision
  • Record who approved the decision
  • Use it consistently across all supplier comparisons
02

Conditional

Use a controlled assumption only when its owner, consequence and confirmation gate are visible.

  • State the assumption in plain language
  • Identify affected process, package and commercial items
  • Set the owner and required decision date
03

Specialist review

Escalate decisions that require process, package, regulatory, building or other qualified authority.

  • Do not convert missing evidence into a sales claim
  • Define the question and evidence needed
  • Keep dependent equipment choices open until review

Decision-control fields

Add governance to the technical input checklist

These fields prevent preliminary answers from being copied into later documents without review.

Decision statement
Write the exact product, process, package, output or scope question being decided.
Current status
Mark confirmed, conditional or specialist review rather than using vague wording such as standard.
Evidence source
Name the drawing, analysis, recipe, site record, requirement or specialist advice supporting the status.
Revision
Record the document version or date so superseded evidence can be identified.
Decision owner
Identify the buyer, supplier, process specialist or other party responsible for resolution.
Affected interfaces
List the process, package, utility, control, layout, commercial or schedule items that depend on the answer.
Alternative branch
Record the architecture that applies if the working assumption is not confirmed.
Confirmation gate
State whether resolution is required before RFQ comparison, design freeze, manufacturing, FAT or site work.
Approval record
Capture the final disposition and where it is incorporated into controlled project documents.

Illustrative decision record

A fixed output target can coexist with an open preservation route

A buyer has approved a reference container and commercial output but has only a provisional recipe and has not assigned the shelf-life or preservation decision.

  1. Mark the reference container and output as confirmed with their drawing and comparison basis.
  2. Record the recipe as conditional, name its current revision and list mixing and product-contact interfaces that may change.
  3. Mark preservation and filling condition for specialist review rather than assuming hot fill or aseptic processing.
  4. Keep heat treatment, hygienic boundary, package thermal suitability and post-fill equipment outside the confirmed scope.
  5. Update the architecture and quotation normalization sheet only after the responsible review closes the decision.

Preliminary resultThe project can progress on genuinely confirmed package and capacity inputs without presenting an unresolved preservation assumption as final engineering.

Illustrative only. Decision status controls communication; it does not replace qualified process, package or regulatory review.

Evidence boundary

What supports this guide—and what still needs confirmation.

Evidence labels keep a reference architecture separate from a final design or commercial promise.

Catalog reference

The supplied 2026 catalog supports reference equipment chains but cannot confirm which chain applies to an incomplete product and package brief.

Engineering interpretation

Architecture decisions remain comparable when evidence, status, owner, consequence and confirmation gate are recorded explicitly.

Project confirmation

Only approved project documents can close conditional items, authorize specialist decisions and establish the final configuration or performance basis.

Buyer questions

Frequently asked questions

These are planning answers. Final process and equipment choices require a confirmed project brief.

What if the filling temperature is not known?

Mark it as not decided and request engineering review. The recipe, hygiene target, shelf-life route and container compatibility must be reviewed together.

Should I compare quotations by number of machines?

No. Compare process coverage, interfaces, reference conditions, utilities and execution scope first.

Is a conditional input acceptable in an RFQ?

Yes, when the assumption, owner, consequence, alternative branch and confirmation gate are explicit. It should not be presented as approved project data.

Can an equipment supplier close every specialist-review item?

No. Product-process, package, regulatory, building and validation decisions may require evidence or approval from other qualified parties named by the project.

Why can two quotations with the same BPH differ greatly?

They may use different reference products, scope boundaries, utilities, automation, packaging, documentation, installation and acceptance assumptions.

What does turnkey need to define?

It must list included, optional, excluded and buyer-supplied process, packaging, utility, factory, installation and acceptance responsibilities.

How to read the technical evidence

Catalog reference The supplied 2026 catalog supports the named CSD and juice/tea equipment chains and is the source for the redrawn functional routes.

Engineering principle Interface explanations show why product, process, package, utilities and line balance must be reviewed together.

Project confirmation The routes are not a final process design, P&ID, validated cycle, quotation, availability statement or performance guarantee. Signed project documents define the final scope.
